Web Design - Grow the Block Community Gardens

Grow the Block is a community-driven nonprofit dedicated to transforming underused urban spaces into vibrant, sustainable gardens. Founded with the belief that food, green space, and beauty should be accessible to everyone, Grow the Block builds gardens that nourish neighborhoods, physically, socially, and emotionally. Through collaborative design, hands-on workshops, and ongoing care, these gardens become more than just growing spaces, they become places of gathering, learning, and empowerment. With a focus on seasonal vegetables, fruit trees, and local biodiversity, Grow the Block encourages self-sufficiency, environmental stewardship, and a deeper connection to the land.

  • This website, for the company Grow the Block, is a tool to serve urban communities seeking access to fresh food, green space, and community connection. The organization generally engages residents of all ages, especially families, educators, and young people interested in gardening, food justice, and sustainability. It also partners with schools, neighborhood groups, nonprofits, and city planners to create an inclusive, lasting impact. The website design is contemporary and clean, but also inviting with lots of photos and information.

  • The process started in the Web Design HTML + CSS course. I created these wireframes and designed mockups as part of the project process. I created the company Grow the Block as a non-profit community garden building organization. After that, I designed the logo and chose a few images I thought represented the business. I organized the pages by importance and added the quote page during this expansion process. Each page demonstrates what the company does, from past garden projects to planning out your garden project. I also included a mission statement to let the viewer better understand the company. These designs served as an outline for my website that I eventually coded. The actual website differs a lot in the final look, but these wireframes are demonstrative of what I wanted the website to look like. I then expanded on the company’s identity, including merch, products, and a truck decal design.

  • Design Problems: I had a lot of issues designing something that I thought I could eventually code. This made my designs very limited and not exactly what I had imagined.

Design Solutions: To solve the problem, I changed a few things during the expansion process that bothered me. I was able to remove the concern of coding and just focus on the design of the pages, which allowed me to have more creative freedom.
